Kate Steinle

Kate Steinle was a young women who had her whole life ahead of her when she was tragically killed by a bullet fired by Jose Inez Garcia Zarate, an illegal immigrant living in California. Zarate had previously been convicted of seven different felonies and had been deported five different times. Bottom line – he shouldn’t have been allowed to live here in the United States.

Three months before the shooting, Zarate was transferred to San Francisco authorities on an outstanding warrant charge. Since San Francisco is a “Sanctuary City”, they refused to turn him over to federal immigration officials. This decision ultimately cost Kate her life.

I was heartbroken this week to hear that once again the system has let down Kate’s family. A jury in California found Zarate not guilty for being responsible for her death. I believe that federal charges will be forthcoming, which I believe should be brought.

The system of “Sanctuary Cities” must come to end. I’ve worked in Congress to get rid of this backwards policy that puts Americans at risk, along with voting to support Kate’s Law, which would lock up dangerous illegal immigrants. The law is the law, and it needs to be enforced. We can’t wait any longer to bring justice for Kate.
